New Tech Jobs Being Created in Cities Far From Silicon Valley

According to a Brookings Institution report, smaller cities like Virginia Beach, Wisconsin, Vancouver and Durham have recently shown strong growth in new tech jobs. On the other hand, cities considered to be tech strongholds have seen their growth rate tumble.

Numerous tech jobs are being created in tech hubs in San Jose and San Francisco, but its growth has slowed since 2019. Job creation gained in Sunbelt cities, college towns and vacation destinations like Ogden, Utah with a growth rate of 7%. Nashville and Phoenix added 1,100 and 1,400 new tech jobs respectively. Philadelphia and Minneapolis and warmer areas like Charlotte and San Antonio also made modest gains in new tech roles.

According to Mark Muro, a Brookings senior researcher who co-wrote the report, the smaller the city indicating tech job growth, the more likely it is associated with remote work, particularly those lifestyle places or college towns.
